Bangkok Day Trip to Floating Market and River Kwai

The Floating Markets of Damnoen Saduak Tour

Experience the way Bangkok used to be before the skyscrapers and cars at the floating markets of Damnoen Saduak approximately 100km outside of Bangkok, with its extraordinary range of colours, fragrances and flavours.

We'll approach the floating markets of Damnoen Saduak on a narrow long-tail speedboat through the marshes as we pass by traditional riverside villages and fruit plantations.

The locals produce and market good here which they sell on there small flat-bottom boats. The market itself is a fabulous site that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

River Kwai Tour from Bangkok

After a fantastic morning at the floating market we'll make our way to Kanchanaburi province where we begin our guided tour of the River Kwai. The Kanchanaburi area secured a place in history from it's WWII landmarks The Bridge of the River Kwai, and the Death Railway, but there's more to this region than it's grisly history - it's a stunning part of Thailand and well worth a trip to on your holiday in Bangkok. Enclosed by verdant forests that open onto a massive sheer cliff, the death railway is one of Thailand's most scenic rail routes.

Continuing our day trip from Bangkok to the floating markets, we'll head to the beautiful Kanchanaburi province to tour the bridge over the river Kwai.

History of the Bridge over River Kwai

Internationally famous due to books and several motion pictures throughout the years, the bridge on the River Kwai forms part of what was known as the Death Railway, linking Thailand with Burma. Built by Allied prisoners of war in the second World War this black iron bridge was brought from Java from Java under Japanese supervision.

Kanchanaburi War Cemetery

Thousands of the mostly Australian, Dutch and British POWs died during construction due to the terrible living conditions, back-breaking work from dawn until after dark and near starvation diet. After the war, the dead were collectively reburied in the Car Cemeteries, remaining forever witness to a brutal and tragic ordeal.

Today the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery contains 6,982 Australian, Dutch and British prisoners who lost their lives during the construction of the death railway.

War Museum at Kanchanaburi

After visiting the war cemetery we'll see what life was like during the construction of the Death Railway over River Kwai for Allied prisoners of war at the museum, reconstructing daily life and showing memorabilia.

Bridge over River Kwai, Lunch and Journey back to Bangkok

Next we'll see the famous Bridge over the River Kwai which is still an active railway line before we stop for some lunch at a local restaurant.

After a fantastic day at the floating markets of Bangkok and exploring the famous Bridge on the River Kwai we'll make our way back to the City of Bangkok, arriving late afternoon.

Floating Market and River Kwai Tour
The floating market and River Kwai day tour from Bangkok was simply amazing, by far the best excursion we booked with Bangkok Excursions and the best day of our holiday to Thailand!

We were picked up early in the morning and taken by a long tailed boat to the floating markets just outside the City, this was fantastic and really busy! To be honest not a lot to buy there but i suppose it's not a shopping mall - its something authentic and different and it certainly was that!

Lots of lovely food there which our brilliant tour guide bought for me at about 1/4 of the normal tourist rate!

Then we drove to the River Kwai region which was stunning. When we first booked this tour my fiancé thought this tour would be a bit depressing after I explained the history of the bridge but the tour wasn't really about that - it's simply a stunning location and what you do learn about the history of the railway and bridge is fascinating.

You have to do this tour - its stunning!

Floating Market and River Kwai Tour
Booked the floating market and River Kwai tour after a friend who went to Bangkok last year recommended Bangkok Excursions which was brilliant.

After watching the Bridge over river Kwai as a child I was quite interested in it and the history of it, and my girlfriend wanted to see the floating markets so this trip was ideal.

We were very pleased with Bangkok Excursions from start to finish and would definitely use them again.
